Getting Started with Musical Multiplication
FAQ's for Musical Multiplication App
What ages is Musical Multiplication designed for?
Musical Multiplication is designed for any age. Some families even choose to do Musical Multiplication together! Through music, even very young children can memorize multiplication facts. While children do not necessarily need to learn multiplication facts at a very young age, often younger siblings will naturally learn them simply from hearing the songs as older siblings practice. Some parents choose to have young children use the program directly (not just through the practice of older siblings) so that multiplication facts are memorized well before their math course books start teaching multiplication. Additionally, children gain many musical blessings from the program, including a better sense of pitch and rhythm, more confidence in singing, and an appreciation for wholesome, lovely music. If you start children young, do not try to push them through the program. Instead, let children participate when they would like and for as long as their attention holds.
Most children start learning multiplication facts in 3rd grade. Simply Good and Beautiful Math starts multiplication in Math 3.
Will this program help my child learn multiplication facts more quickly?
If you compare a child spending 10 minutes a day with flashcards or drills to a child using Musical Multiplication for 10 minutes a day, which child would memorize facts more quickly? Think about this: Which would be easier, more effective, and quicker—teaching a child to memorize the order of the letters in the alphabet without music or with music? Without the classic song we all know and love, memorizing the order of the letters would take much longer.
Music is powerful, not only for speed of memorization, but also for retention. Music is easily ingrained into memory. Musical Multiplication offers many benefits that drills and flashcards simply do not: repeated exposure to beautiful watercolor images and uplifting music (which can impact your children long-term in more ways than you may realize); repeated practice with musical concepts, such as pitch, rhythm, and melody; and, of course, enjoyment! Listening to music can also improve your children’s literacy! For example, a 2016 study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that musical experiences during childhood can accelerate brain development in reading skills and language acquisition.
What are the different purchase options for the Musical Multiplication app?
The best value is to buy unlimited access with a one-time purchase on our website.
A 7-day free trial is available on the Apple app or Google Play stores. The app stores also have the following subscription options that renew automatically:
- 1-month subscription: $2.99
- 1-year subscription: $26.99

What if I purchased an older physical or PDF version of Musical Multiplication?
Purchases of previous editions of Musical Multiplication are only valid for the particular edition purchased; access to the new Musical Multiplication app is a separate purchase.
While the new app has similar content to the previous versions of Musical Multiplication, including the same images and songs, the app provides an elevated and engaging experience for those families who would like an even more effective and enjoyable way for their children to memorize multiplication facts. The app also allows children and parents to track progress with the Mastery section of the app, as well as additional songs added for the 0s, 1s, 2s, 10s, and 11s multiplication facts. Your children can continue enjoying the PDF or physical versions if you already have them and do not want to purchase the upgraded app.
Should my child practice the letter sets, number sets, or both?
We highly recommend using our carefully curated letter sets to practice and master multiplication. These sets are designed to maximize learning and to follow the scope and sequence of multiplication mastery in Simply Good and Beautiful Math courses. Musical Multiplication and the letter-set practice and mastery can be used whether or not your child uses Simply Good and Beautiful Math. Number sets are available for students who may need additional practice with specific facts.
Does Musical Multiplication teach the concepts behind multiplication?
No. Musical Multiplication helps children memorize multiplication facts. Your child’s math program should teach the concepts behind multiplication.
Should children learn the concepts behind multiplication before memorizing the facts?
That is up to parents, but it can never hurt for children to memorize the songs before their math course starts teaching multiplication. Children will still learn the concepts, but they will already have the memorization part down!
Why does the program not include all multiplication facts?
Twos (e.g., 2 × 4, 2 × 5, etc.) are not included because children learn double addition facts and should easily know the twos times table. Zeros, ones, tens, and elevens are also not included because they are easily memorized. We have songs available for zeros, ones, twos, tens, and elevens, but these facts are not included in any sets, flashcards, or mastery activities. Because problems like 4 × 5 and 5 × 4 have the same answer, only one of each combination is included.
Should I be careful about moving through the sets too quickly? How long should I expect the program to take?
While music is a powerful way to memorize, there are many facts, so children should not move through the sets too quickly. Children should solidly master a set before moving on to another set. Regular review of mastered sets is also needed, and consistency is key. Keep in mind that, with the regular drill-and-flashcard approach, children often take 1–3 years to master multiplication facts. While Musical Multiplication should take considerably less time, your child can still spend months of consistent practice completing the entire program. However, some children memorize through music unbelievably fast, so if your child masters a set quickly, move on to the next one!
Will my older child think the songs are cheesy?
Award-winning songwriter Jenny Phillips wrote Musical Multiplication to provide songs for memorization that are fun and inspiring (and not annoying to listen to repeatedly). We suggest your older children listen to the sample songs to help you decide if they would like to learn multiplication facts this way.
Regarding Musical Multiplication with older children, Jenny Phillips said, “My 12-year-old LOATHED flashcards, and I hate to admit that she did not learn her multiplication facts that well. When I wrote and produced these songs, she resisted them, thinking she was too old for the songs. However, I required her to either do flashcards each day or Musical Multiplication a few times a week. She grudgingly chose Musical Multiplication. It wasn’t long until she was singing along to the songs and loving them. She never complains anymore when it’s time for practice. She loves the relaxing time she has with Musical Multiplication. And . . . she has memorized her facts very well now, and I did not have to try to push through flashcards with her each day. I personally recommend this program for most older children who have not yet learned their multiplication facts well, even though they are likely to grumble a little bit. There might just be less grumbling overall than there would be with daily drills and flashcards. But, yes, there will be some older children who just will not be a match for these songs, so use your best judgment.”
Will this program work if my child hates singing or cannot sing in tune?
Yes! While singing aloud is optimal, the program will still work well if children sing in their minds. Also, children do not have to sing in tune for the program to work. Learning the basics of melody and rhythm is wonderful for all children. If a child hates singing, that may be all the more reason to do the program since it can help them improve these skills as they sing along.
Is this only for homeschoolers or those doing Simply Good and Beautiful Math courses?
No! This is for all children using any type of math program.

How do I download and play the songs?
After your purchase, you should have been emailed a link to download the songs—a ZIP file that contains two folders. One folder has all the individual songs, in case you ever want to practice the songs individually. The other folder has the songs in Sets (Sets A, B, C, and D). The program is designed to be learned in sets. Each set is around 5 minutes long. All the songs for the set are on one track. Simply unzip and save the files to your computer or hand-held device and play them with your device's audio player.
Why does the program not include all multiplication facts?
TWOS (e.g. 2x4, 2x5, etc.) are not included because children learn double addition facts and should easily know the TWOS times tables. TENS are also not included because they are easily memorized. Because problems like 4x5 and 5x4 have the same answer, only one of each combination is included.
Should I be careful about moving through the sets too quickly? How long should I expect the program to take?
While music is a powerful way to memorize, there are a lot of facts to memorize, so the child should not move through the sets too quickly. You want the child to have a set solidly mastered before moving on to another set. Regular review of mastered sets is needed. Consistency is also key. Keep in mind that with the regular drill-and-flashcard approach, children often take 1–3 years until multiplication facts are mastered. While Musical Multiplication should take considerably less time, it can still take months of consistent practice to complete the whole program. With that being said, some children memorize through music unbelievably fast. If the child has mastered a set quickly, move on to the next!
