Brave Little Ruby
by Shannen Yauger
Great example of bravery!
A wonderful and inspiring story about a young girl’s bravery! A must read for all children! My boys and girls all enjoyed this story!
A book that inspires great discussion
This was C’s first level 2 book, and her reading has improved so much this year in order to get here. Ruby’s story is important, and she is a great role model for children because of her resilience, bravery, hard work, and perseverance. My daughter especially liked that this was a true story, and was fascinated when I pulled up some photos and video of Ruby Bridges on the internet for her to see while we read. We both finished the book with renewed determination to always be kind and stand up for others.
I will offer parents of emerging readers a word of caution that the final chapter should be read TO a child at this reading level instead of BY them, or you will be dealing with a lot of frustration. The font remains the same as the rest of the book, but many of the words are significantly longer and more difficult to decode, so after slogging through the first few sentences with lots of help, I finally took over and was glad I did. The last chapter that acts as an afterword is written quite differently, not likely meant for a level 2 reader to decode, and should probably be printed in a different, smaller font that hints at this.
A good book encouraging bravery
My daughter loves this book! She loves how brave she is and wants to be bold like Ruby. I love that it brings this true story to life for my daughter at such a young age and gives her someone to look up to.
Great age appropriate way to learn about segregation!
We really enjoyed this book. It told the story of Ruby thoroughly, hitting on the hard stuff, while still being and uplifting and encouraging book. It led the way to some great family discussions!
Inspiring Bravery
My 1st grader just read “Ruby” and she loved it! As a mixed race child she had so many questions about what segregation meant and why it happened…. A great and inspiring book for young readers
