What an amazing book based off of a true story! This book left my kids begging to learn more about the revolutionary war. While my son loves the story, my daughter really loved this! She loves the fight, strength, and passion this young woman showed. A great family read aloud!
Two of my children read this together (my kids are only 1 year apart in age). Usually, I get two very different ratings, however, for this book they both enjoyed the action, the acts of bravery, and the fact the book had a girl helping in war. I loved the historical aspects of the book, showing that women often posed as men to help in wartimes throughout history. Both of my children mentioned the bravery of the main character was their favorite. Overall, they both gave this book 5 stars. My son did mention he didn’t care for the love interest part, however, my daughter liked that part. They still would highly recommend this book for everyone. Another great read from TGAB. Thank you
Enjoyable short book based on a true story of a young woman who wanted to fight for Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War. The book inspired us to learn more about the real person behind the book, Deborah Sampson.
I thought this would be a great read aloud for my kids. Unfortunately this is actually a romance book. 😔 I have 6th grade down to prek. I did eliminate the romance parts the best I could with out making the story choppy. If they could have left that out, it would have been a better story. It’s also a pretty short book.

This book is based on a true story and follows eighteen-year-old Anne as she is faced with choices and learns valuable lessons of love, courage and the true meaning of patriotism.
My 13 year old daughter has said this is her favorite book. After reading it myself, I can see why. The book is filled with examples of courage, love, and goodness.
“Yes,” she said, “it is tempting, what you offer me. But there is more to life than that.” She tapped the handbill on the table. “And more than this little town.” Her voice became intense. “I want more, do you hear? I want more from life than that!”
Eighteen-year-old Anne is faced with two choices: enter into the security of a happy marriage, like the other young ladies around her, or fulfill her patriotic desire to fight for her country. Posing as a young man, she enlists in the United States Army and joins the fight for freedom amid harsh conditions, dangerous missions, and even betrayal. Through it all, Anne learns valuable lessons of love, courage, and the true meaning of patriotism. Will Anne’s secret identity keep her safe, or will betrayal and the need to survive put her in harm’s way?
Based on a true story, Girl with a Musket is a treasure that will be enjoyed for years to come.
