This book was a wonderful supplement while we were studying the history of the 1800s. It takes place in California near where we live, which added to the fun. I found it interesting, even as an adult. I really liked its message of how satisfying it can be to feel useful for your family. I think kids can find Mike’s hopes and fears to be relatable.
I read this aloud to my kids 7, 9, and 11. They all loved it and wished the story went on! It reminded me of the Little House books only the main character is a boy. I loved what Ma taught Mike, “A person is brave because he does what he should, even when he is scared.” Great book! Would definitely recommend it.
Redwood Pioneer is a delightful book full of adventure, hard work, and support of family. It would be a beautiful read aloud to go along with the Botany science unit. Children of all ages can learn how to study nature and how to work together for the good of others. It’s a fun story of adventure and children will learn as they enjoy reading.
In the words of my 8 year old son “ it’s funny and they work hard and I want to keep reading more”
He was constantly reading little segments to me and was excited to keep reading. Thank you for such wonderful wholesome literature!
Wonderful! Perfect read aloud for young kids. It is about a family who moves to the Redwood forest and builds a house. There are wonderful lessons about learning to work hard and love your family.
Set in California in the 1870s, this story follows Mike O’Grady and his family as they leave their potato farm to settle in the redwood forest. Ten-year-old Mike is sad to leave his family’s farm, but he soon finds his new home exciting and discovers a love of nature and of drawing. From being threatened by a wounded grizzly bear to discovering waterfalls, Mike’s adventures combine in a fun, wholesome book packed with good messages.
