Language Arts Placement Test
Language Arts Placement Test PDFThe Good and the Beautiful language arts courses thoroughly cover reading, writing, grammar, spelling, literature, geography, and art for each level. However, when choosing which level to place a child in, we strongly suggest the child start on the course level that corresponds to his or her grade level, unless extra reading help is needed.
About Grammar Principles
For levels 4 and below, grammar principles are reviewed in each level, so no specific grammar knowledge is needed to start. For levels 4, 5, 6, and 7, there is brief Grammar Prep Unit (free PDF download at goodandbeautiful.com/prep,) which you can use to get your child up to speed with the grammar principles needed to start the course levels if your child has not had a lot of grammar experience. Please note that there is only one Grammar Prep Unit, and it serves as a preparation for any of these levels: 4, 5, 6, or 7.

Reading Placement Test
Reading Level Placement Test PDFThis Reading Placement Test determines a child’s reading level for The Good and the Beautiful Bookshop and Book List books. Please note that this placement test aligns with our Bookshop book levels and is a rough guide for helping you choose books for your child. Some children read more slowly, especially when reading aloud, but still enjoy higher-level books. Use your best judgment.
We suggest allowing children to read books that are both on their reading level and below it, as all the books in our Bookshop and on our Book List are high quality, worthwhile literature that can ignite a love for reading. Many children above Level 3B may enjoy the challenge of independently reading books that are one level higher than their current reading level.
Full details about how to use this placement test and how to choose books for your child are available in the Reading Placement Test PDF.
