My daughter reads 2-3 books a week and she said this is the best book she has ever read! She wants my husband and I to read it so we can talk about it. A parent can’t ask for more than that!
I read this with my 5 kids ages 6-14. They all loved it and so did I. Made a great family read aloud1
I read this aloud to my son, and I felt it was one good way to introduce him to the topic of slavery. I also thought the book gave us an interesting look at early Christianity. The main character is a newly bound slave, and we see through him the pain, anger, and despair of degrading and inhuman captivity. Then, as he and others learn about “The Way” taught by a man names Jesus, we see the beautiful power of love, forgiveness, changing hearts, and a much better way to live and be. Well worth the read!
I loved how this book helped my children see how extraordinary the teachings of Christ were in history. One of our favorite history read-a-louds.
At first, I thought we might not enjoy this book from looking at the title alone. However, I think this was one of the best books we read all year. We coincidentally read this around Easter, which is a great time to read this book. It’s about learning to forgive and trust that there is a God, and He has good plans for us all. A great read!
Captured by Romans in the forests of Gaul, Madoc is sold as a slave to a Roman centurion stationed in Judea. Though he is not a hard master, Madoc is determined to escape and find his mother. However, the story takes a turn when Madoc and his master meet followers of Jesus and hear about the new way of living he taught. This story is not only engaging and packed with great messages, but it also teaches about the historical time period and the growing influence of the early Christian faith.
This book is a suggested read-aloud for the History Year 3 course and is included in the optional History 3 Book Pack.
