Trumper
by Hetty Burlingame Beatty
A story about loyalty, hard work, and potential
My 10 yo loves horse books and Trumper is no exception. Mark begs to give Trumper a chance when his dad wants to sell him for unruly behavior. Through Mark’s love and patience, Trumper learns to excel and even enjoy everything he needs to do for the family. Through their team work and sacrifice, the duo goes on to save the farm during hard times.
Disappointing actions for good and beautiful
I love good and beautiful books and am so sad to see them discontinuing this part of their ministry. The world needs more of their books! But I was very disappointed in this one. The main character frequently yells and shouts at his horse, and when the boy was very misbehaved and lied outright didn’t get into trouble.
Loved
This is my 10 year old sons review. He loved this book and gave it 5 stars.
Best read aloud yet!
As soon as we read the last sentence, my kids exclaimed that this was the best read aloud we have done yet! The story of Trumper teaches perseverance, determination, hard work, and sacrifice. This would be a wonderful read for kids who love horses or participate in 4-H (though we don’t do either). The illustrations are beautiful too!
Wonderful!
My son read this book independently and talks about it constantly! He now compares every book he reads to this one!

Level 6
Trumper had been a respectable carriage and saddle horse all his life and he wasn’t going to take to the soil just because Tod Sullivan had bought him for his farm!
When Farmer Sullivan purchased Trumper to help with the farm chores, he had no idea the trouble that would follow. It doesn’t take long for the farmer to decide the horse just isn’t worth keeping. But the farmer’s son Mark has faith in the beautiful horse and is determined to train him not only for the farm work, but also to help him win the prized Angus calf at the upcoming 4-H competition.
This inspiring story shares wonderful lessons about seeing the potential in others, patience, perseverance, and celebrating differences.
