FAQs for Simply Spelling
How do I get started?
You can get started by going to Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling at courses.goodandbeautiful.com. From there you can use an existing account from our website or set up a new account. An email address and password are required to set up a new account. On your first login, you will receive an email with instructions to complete the registration. Once completed, it will take you to a screen to create a Teacher PIN and add your students. Each family will need its own account, but multiple students can be added to one account.
Is this course free?
Yes, this web-based app is 100% free. There is a cost for the optional Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling Practice Books.
Do I have to use the Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling Practice Book?
Students are encouraged to have a physical copy of a Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling Practice Book, but it is not required. The app will prompt students to practice writing the words they miss in each session, and the practice books offer fun and engaging activities to accompany their written practice. There are six different practice books, each with unique and interesting themes that correlate with the different levels of The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts courses, though any book can be used at any time. Alternatively, students can simply complete the additional practice on notebook paper.
Can I use this course on a phone or tablet?
No. Because there is typing involved, this course is designed to be used on a desktop computer or laptop.
Can my student use this course with little or no typing skills?
Yes. The students will only need to type letters to spell words. There are no timers or penalties for mistakes in typing. Being a skilled typist is not required. We do recommend the students double-check all of their typing before submitting their answers to ensure no mistakes were made when spelling the words.
Can my student complete this course without using The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts courses?
Yes. The Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling App can be completed on its own or in conjunction with The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts courses.
Can my student complete the spelling course without using the online app?
No. This course is available only on the online app.
Which level is right for my child?
Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling is created for students in 4th–8th grade. A placement test is available at the top of this page or on simplyspelling.com to determine the correct level for your student. To place them in the correct level on the web-based app, click on the level drop-down menu, select the correct level, and type in the Teacher PIN. You can also use the following breakdown to place your student based on their language arts level.
- Grade 4: A–F
- Grade 5: G–K
- Grade 6: L–P
- Grade 7: Q–U
- Grade 8: V–Z
How does each level work?
Each level has four sections: Words, Homophones and Commonly Confused Words, Rules, and Principles. There are 32 spelling words, 5 homophone and commonly confused word pairs, 4 individual spelling rules, and 4 individual spelling principles in each level. Students will work through the levels in sessions. There is a section on the left side panel of the app with progress indicators that show where the student is in each section of the level. Once the student has completed 100% of each section, they will have mastered that level and will move on to the next one.
How does a session work?
Each session will include: 4 spelling words, 1 homophone or commonly confused word pair, 1 rule with 5 correlated spelling words, and 1 principle with 4 correlated spelling words. If a student spells a word wrong, they will see that word in future sessions and levels until it is considered mastered.
Here is an example of the content included in one session of the course:
- Words: family, because, happy, again
- Homophones/Commonly Confused Words: heel/heal
- Rules: 1-1-1 Rule (words: growing, shipped, getting, running, cooking)
- Principles: Words with EW and ER (words: blew, few, ever, service)
How long will it take to complete this course?
Each Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling level will take a minimum of eight sessions to complete. The online program is curated to each student’s skill level based on the words they master in each section, so the total number of sessions for each level will vary for each student. Each session takes about 5–10 minutes to complete, and we recommend the students complete at least one session each day they work on language arts.
How do I adjust the settings in the app, and what settings can I adjust?
You can adjust the settings by going to the Settings menu on the left side panel. Click the Teacher Dashboard to access and manage the students and settings for each student. You can turn off the end-of-session PIN, the autoplay audio, and the autoplay video for each student. You can also add, edit, or delete students from the account. Please note that deleting a student will delete all of their progress and data. There is also an App Settings option on the Settings menu where you can adjust the zoom of the app to make the screen larger or smaller.
My student made a mistake, but they know how to spell the word they missed. Is there a way to reset or fix that?
Yes. There is a reset button on the top-right corner of the app for each section. You can choose to reset just the section your student is on (Words, Homophones and Commonly Confused Words, Rules, or Principles) or choose to reset the whole session so they start over from the beginning at Words. The Teacher PIN is required to reset the section or session. Please note that resetting the section or session will erase the student’s progress for that section or session.
Is this course parent-directed?
The course is designed to be student-directed, but a parent or teacher should decide where a student should begin and—if the Simply Spelling level is too hard or too easy—when to move their child to a more appropriate level. The parent or teacher will create a PIN upon account creation and will use it to navigate the app, reset any sections, or make changes to the student’s profile and settings.
How do I report an error or problem with the app?
The Simply Good and Beautiful Spelling App has a “Report a Problem” button in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Clicking this button will send a screenshot of the screen to the development team. You can mark up the screenshot using the tools on the right side or navigate to a different screen in the app, if necessary, by selecting “Navigate.” Include a comment in the text box and select the severity of the problem from the drop-down menu.
Do you store or track any information?
The app stores the account email, the student profile names, and each student’s location in the course. The app also stores the words the student mastered and the words that are missed so it can track what needs to be repeated for mastery. The data that is stored for the account is available for download on the Teacher Dashboard. Note that this data is not designed to be human readable and isn’t intended to be used for reporting mastery or completion of the course. We do not sell, trade, share, or rent users’ personal identification information to others.
