Choose Your Courses: First Grade

Watch your child’s reading skills soar as they complete the Level 1 Language Arts course! This full-year first grade language arts course incorporates God, family, nature, beautiful art, and strong moral values. This beautiful and academically strong course combines the following subjects into one easy-to-teach, no prep-time needed course: reading, phonics. writing, spelling, literature, grammar & punctuation, geography, and art.

The Language Arts Level 1 Course Set includes the Level 1 Course Book and the Reading Booster B Cards and Books Set. The Reading Booster resources teach phonics and reading in a powerful, fun, and sequential way creating strong and enthusiastic readers.

My Second Nature Reader includes 20 short stories for beginning readers at a first grade reading level. Each story focuses on one or two phonics concepts or groups of first grade sight words. My Second Nature Reader follows the exact scope and sequence of the Reading Booster B Cards, which are integrated into the Level 1 Language Arts Course Set. For example, Story #16 in My Second Nature Reader covers OU and OW that correlates with a reading booster card, and avoids any concepts the child has not learned yet.

My Second Nature Reader is not integrated into the language arts course, but is designed to give the child extra independent reading practice at exactly the level the child is on. The Good and the Beautiful’s wonderful readers boost confidence and makes reading less overwhelming and a more enjoyable and positive experience.

Handwriting Level 1 is for children in first grade. This level focuses on the correct print formation of letters and numbers and, near the end of the course, introduces short words and sentences. The course starts with larger print and, near the end, starts to reduce the size as children’s motor skills improve. At the beginning of the course and at different times throughout the course, children will do “overview” sheets. These sheets allow children general exposure to all letters and numbers. The rest of the course introduces 2–3 new letters at a time, going in the order of the most used letters. This approach helps children to focus on mastering letters before moving on, but at the same time lets children have some experience with all letters, which may be helpful as children may need to write words and letters in other subjects.

Many families find that teaching one lesson per week or more is ideal. This course will take one full school year to complete if it is completed at a pace of one lesson per week. If you plan to teach more than one lesson per week we suggest also purchasing Science for Little Hearts and Hands: Wind and Waves. A third Science for Little Hearts and Hands course is planned for future release.
