  • “O Christmas Tree” Lyrics

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
    How lovely are thy branches!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
    How lovely are thy branches!
Not only green when summer’s here,
But in the coldest time of year.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
    How lovely are thy branches!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure dost thou bring me!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure dost thou bring me!
For every year the Christmas tree,
Brings to us all both joy and glee.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure dost thou bring me!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How sturdy God hath made thee!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How sturdy God hath made thee!
Thou bidd'st us all place faithfully
    Our trust in God, unchangingly!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How sturdy God hath made thee!

Story of the Song

The Christmas season is full of many family traditions: cookies, gift giving, family gatherings, and the celebration of the birth of our Savior.

Close your eyes and picture this: a crackling fire in the fireplace, a nativity scene prominently displayed, stockings hanging from the mantle, a plate full of sugar cookies, and an assortment of gifts waiting to be opened.

In that warm description of Christmas, one thing was left out. What was it?

Yes, the Christmas tree!

Forests of fir trees have decorated the German landscape for hundreds of years. These evergreen trees are faithfully green year-round. During the Middle Ages, their strong branches symbolized life during the long, dark, and cold winters. On moonlit nights, stars twinkled through the fir branches, showcasing the tree’s beauty.  It wasn’t until the 1500s that decorated trees were used for Christmas festivities.

In 1824 German writer and composer Ernst Anschütz wrote the song “O Tannenbaum” about the beautifully decorated trees adorned with candles, dried fruit, and ornaments. In English the song title has been translated to “O Christmas Tree”; however, the German word “tannenbaum” simply means fir tree.

Later, in 1848 Queen Victoria and her German husband Prince Albert helped the Christmas tree gain popularity in England. In the United States, German immigrants brought the tradition of the Christmas tree with them as they settled across America. As the years passed, more and more families added the tradition of the Christmas tree to their homes. Even US presidents began hauling in a magnificent evergreen tree each year to display at the White House.

Near the turn of the twentieth century, overharvesting of evergreens became a problem. This led to two solutions: artificial Christmas trees and Christmas tree farms. Families could purchase an artificial tree they could use year after year, or they could visit a tree farm and pick out a live tree. The tree farmers would then plant new trees to replace the ones cut down. Christmas tree farms became so popular in the 1930s that President Franklin Roosevelt started a tree farm on his New York property.
