  • “All Things Bright and Beautiful” Lyrics

    Refrain:
    All things bright and beautiful,
    All creatures great and small,
    All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

    Each little flower that opens,
    Each little bird that sings,
    He made their glowing colors,
    He made their tiny wings.
    (Refrain)

    The purple-headed mountain,
    The river running by,
    The sunset and the morning,
    That brightens up the sky.
    (Refrain)

The cold wind in the winter,
    The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
    He made them, every one.
    (Refrain)

Story of the Song

Cecil Frances Alexander, Fanny to her friends and family, was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1818. As a young schoolgirl, she loved God and marveled at His wondrous creations. Wanting to share this beauty with everyone, she began writing poetry in her journal. Her creative and beautiful poetry poured onto the page, and her simple phrasing and vivid imagery were loved by readers young and old.

Before she was 30, she had written enough poetry to publish two collections of verses and hymns: Verses for Holy Seasons (1846) and Hymns for Little Children (1848). In Franny’s dedication of Hymns for Little Children, she writes: “I inscribe these simple lines, hoping that the language of verse which children love may help to impress on their minds what they are, what I have promised for them, and what they must seek to be.” It was in this book that “All Things Bright and Beautiful” was first published to help explain to children how God is the “Maker of Heaven and Earth.” Hymns for Little Children was not only well loved by children, but by adults too. In fact, the book has had almost 70 editions since its first release.

Two years after the publication of “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” Franny married Reverend William Alexander. Together, they had four children. In her lifetime Franny wrote almost 400 poems for children. Some, such as “Once in Royal David’s City,” are still sung by Christians today.

Fanny cared deeply for all of God’s creation, especially His people. She gave away much of the money she earned from her book sales. Daily, she brought food, clothing, and medical supplies to those in need. Fanny also started a school for the deaf with her sister.

In 1895, this extraordinarily gifted writer was laid to rest in Derry, Ireland, overlooking our Maker’s beautiful creation.
