How to Homeschool Multiple Levels of Language Arts at One Time

Should I teach language arts family-style or individually?

Family-style learning in homeschool for subjects like history and science is very effective. But at The Good and the Beautiful, we believe children benefit greatly from being on their own individual level for language arts. 

How can I teach multiple levels of language arts at once?

So, how do you teach multiple children at different levels, especially if you are a working mom, have a baby or toddler, or just need to get it all done in a day? 

There are several ways to answer this question, but I’ll tell you how I did it when my children were younger, and I was homeschooling my own children and even adding in children from another family. I taught four different levels of The Good and the Beautiful language arts at one time!

How The Good and The Beautiful Helps

As I share the way I accomplished this, keep in mind that The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts levels 4 and above are designed to be mostly student-directed, so they require very little parental involvement each day.

  • My Method: How I Taught Language Arts to Multiple Children at Once

    I taught using what we called “Language Arts Rotations.” First, I let the younger kids play while I completed the parent-led sections in the older children’s lessons. With The Good and the Beautiful, this does not take very long. 

    After that, the older children were ready to complete the majority of their work independently. At some levels, the parent only needs to spend five to seven minutes with each child.

Then I brought in the younger children and sat one on each side of me. I would explain or teach a section to one child, and while that child completed the work for that section, I would turn and work with the other child.

They each had a handwriting book and a personal reading book nearby. I taught them that whenever I was helping the other child and they needed my help or had finished their section, they should quietly work on handwriting or read independently while waiting.

When they opened their handwriting and reading books, it was a signal to me that they needed my help or were done with their work, and I would help them as soon as I could.

Using this method with The Good and the Beautiful, I was usually able to complete language arts with all four children in about an hour.

I hope this was helpful. Let me add one more thing: Homeschooling does not need to be perfect to be effective. 

There may be interruptions, toddlers climbing on your lap, babies needing attention, or children melting down and not finishing an entire lesson. 

That is normal, and it is completely okay. There are plenty of times in traditional school settings when instruction is not occurring as well.
