“Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” Lyrics
-
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush.
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning.
This is the way we wash our face,
Wash our face, wash our face.
This is the way we wash our face
On a cold and frosty morning.
This is the way we comb our hair,
Comb our hair, comb our hair.
This is the way we comb our hair
On a cold and frosty morning. -
This is the way we brush our teeth,
Brush our teeth, brush our teeth.
This is the way we brush our teeth
On a cold and frosty morning.
This is the way we put on our clothes,
Put on our clothes, put on our clothes.
This is the way we put on our clothes
On a cold and frosty morning.
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush.
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning. -

Sing along with these delightful verses about getting ready in the morning in this fun illustrated video from The Good and the Beautiful!
Story of the Song
Although the lyrics are “Here we go round the mulberry bush,” mulberries actually grow on trees! The song originated in England. In the 1840s, it was published in the book Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales: A Sequel to the Nursery Rhymes of England by James Orchard Halliwell. In this publication, it was titled “The Bramble-Bush” rather than “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.” It was sung as a game to help children have fun with their daily chores.
Play the Game
Any number of children can play “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.” The game begins with the children holding hands and dancing around in a circle, singing the opening verse:
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush.
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning.
Then with each verse that follows, children pretend to make the motions of the daily habit: “wash our face . . . comb our hair . . . brush our teeth . . . put on our clothes.” Children can add their own verses to the song as well! For example, they can sing, ”make our beds,” “tie our shoes,” “sweep the floor,” “clean our rooms,” and so on.
For extra fun, children can play another version of the game: pretending to be animals. They can take turns making up new verses about animal actions: “This is the way the tigers roar, this is the way the elephants walk,” or any number of other actions.
Teaching Independence Skills
When preschoolers begin to learn how to do simple daily routines like brushing their teeth and making their beds independently at a young age, they gain self-confidence in simple tasks which builds toward more complex tasks as they get older. Not only that, they learn to solve problems and not give up when something is difficult. Songs like “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” can make chores or daily tasks more enjoyable. Using a daily or weekly chart like the “Get Ready for the Day” chart included with the free PDF of the lyrics can help children track their progress.
Practicing independence skills also helps children prepare for kindergarten. In our Kindergarten Readiness blog post, we list some daily self-help skills as well as simple chores young children can begin to learn. You will also find many other helpful tools for getting your child ready for kindergarten, such as our free printable Kindergarten Readiness Checklist.
