“There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today” Lyrics
There is sunshine in my soul today,
More glorious and bright
Than glows in any earthly sky,
For Jesus is my light.Refrain:
O there’s sunshine, blessed sunshine,
When the peaceful happy moments roll:
When Jesus shows His smiling face,
There is sunshine in the soul. There is music in my soul today,
A carol to my King,
And Jesus, listening, can hear
The songs I cannot sing.(Refrain)
There is springtime in my soul today,
For when the Lord is near,
The dove of peace sings in my heart,
The flowers of grace appear.(Refrain)

The Story Behind “There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today”
For Eliza Edmunds Hewitt, life would not be easy, but because of her deep love for Jesus, she found joy and beauty all around her. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1851, she attended the local school and graduated as valedictorian. Eliza loved learning and went on to become a schoolteacher. After a terrible spinal injury that left her bedridden, she was forced to give up her teaching career.
Eliza lay in bed, day after day, month after month. It would be understandable to anyone if she had grown cold and bitter. But that was not the case! Through this painful trial, Eliza kept her mind sharp by studying literature and reading the Bible. Confinement to her bed and time spent alone with her thoughts on Jesus led her to begin writing poetry and hymns.
One day Eliza felt strong enough for a brief walk in the spring sunshine. She was so overjoyed by its warmth and beauty that she wrote the words to “There Is Sunshine in My Soul. Today” Her immense love for the Word combined with the sunshine and fresh air, helped heal her body enough to lead Sunday school.
Several composers and hymnists helped to publish Eliza’s hymns. One hymnist, Fanny Crosby, became a close friend. Fanny lost her eyesight at a very young age, so her grandmother faithfully read the Bible to her daily. Fanny quickly memorized scripture and gained a deep love for the Bible. Like Eliza, Fanny wrote hundreds of well-known hymns despite her lack of eyesight.
Eliza quietly passed away in 1920, leaving a legacy of positivity as well as more than 500 hymns, many of which are still sung in churches today.
