The History of Color Names

People didn’t always describe objects by color names. In fact, many ancient cultures didn’t have common names for colors. Instead, descriptive words for “shine,” “burn,” or “blaze” were used to describe the brightness or darkness of an object’s color.

Each culture had its own meaning for “bright” and “dark.” “Bright” could mean anything from white to yellow to red, and “dark” could mean anything from blue to black to brown.

Some cultures, like the Japanese, even used the same word for two colors. The Japanese word aoi was used to describe both the blue sky and the green grass. Eventually, using common color names, like the words in our color songs, caught on in many languages.

You allow expectations beyond what we believe a child can learn and do. You make this all possible for us parents and caregivers. Not only are we allowed to feel confident, but we allow our children to aspire beyond a classroom setting molded according to societal expectations instead of their individual personality and thinking/beliefs. Thank you, because words can only describe so much when actions speak louder than words.
