Homeschooling is a blessing in so many ways. The first day of homeschool each year is full of excitement—and maybe a little apprehension. In this blog post we’ve created a list of 30 Fun Ways to Celebrate the First Day of Homeschool.

You don’t have to go big to celebrate! The idea is to make the day memorable and fun. A day with something special offers encouragement and excitement. It can help establish a positive start to a year of growth and learning.

30 Fun Ways to Celebrate the First Day of Homeschool

  1. Add some fun new decor to your learning area.
  2. Take “Back-to-Homeschool” pictures.
  3. Pick out a new book for each child.

4. Go out for doughnuts.

5. Have family prayer and worship time together.

6. Set out a special little gift for each child.

7. Get new school supplies.

8. Make pancakes or another special food for breakfast.

9. Fill in an “All About Me” page as a keepsake. 

10. Visit a local farm.

11. Go out for ice cream or make homemade ice cream.

12. Decorate the front door or make a balloon arch.

13. Game School (play board games) all day.

14. Get a new water bottle, lunch box, pencil box, or backpack.

15. Go for a hike in the woods.

16. Read all day.

18. Have shorter lessons.

20. Get a fun new stuffy that comes out during homeschool and read-aloud time. 

21. Give the first day a new name, such as "Not Back-to-School Day," and take a field trip to the beach, museum, zoo, or other fun location. This might be especially fun for families that homeschool year-round!

22. Get fresh haircuts or manicures for all.

27. Write a note of encouragement to each child and hide it in their lunch box, pencil box, or in a book.

28. Make a “Jar of Kindness.” Explain to the children that each time you see or hear an act of kindness, a marble, marshmallow, or other token of your choosing will be added to the family jar. Decide as a family what you will do when the jar is filled.

29. Read a special book together.

30. Have a mini “Back-to-Homeschool” party the night before. Make party hats, cupcakes, and play family games.
