It’s as if you are part of the pond as well when reading this. I learned a ton about muskrats and beavers, so I am sure my kids did too. We love having books to go with our science units!
I loved reading this book aloud to my children. We learned about so many animals that we really don’t have experience with. Who knew there were so many animals that interact in one pond?!
Mammals of Small Pond is about a pond featuring a raccoon mom, a mink family, an otter family, a muskrat family and a beaver family. In winter a thick sheet of ice covers small pond, and the beavers and minks are trapped under the ice, but don’t worry-they have burrows under the water and they have food.
I liked it, because it taught me about some cool stuff that I didn’t know, and because the chapters aren’t called “chapters”-they’re called winter, summer, fall, and spring.
It was a super short. I recommend it for children who are beginning to read chapter books.
This nature lore book tells a story about nature instead of just presenting nature facts. This really appeals to some of my kids that need more of a story to help them love learning about nature instead of just fact after fact being presented. My pickiest non-fiction reader loved this beautiful little book!
I liked learning about the mammals at the pond in a simply beautiful descriptive manner. Reading this book was almost like watching a documentary as the author takes you from one animal and one season to the next. This will be the perfect companion ton the mammals science unit!
Life at the beaver pond is never dull or boring. The ebb and flow of work and play keeps all the little animals there busy throughout the year. With an entertaining storybook style, Mammals of Small Pond offers an insightful look at the day-to-day lives of minks, raccoons, otters, beavers, and muskrats. Follow along as they build homes, find food, teach their little ones, and have a bit of fun as well.
