Language Arts Level 4: Quick Start

Welcome to The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts Level 4

Before You Begin

Language Arts Level 4 is designed to be open-and-go!
This means that there is no need to read or prepare anything daily.

It is, however, extremely useful to spend a few minutes
getting an overview of the course.

Here are a few highlights to help you have successful start.

The Level 4 course set arrives shrink wrapped and includes the individual items listed below. Are you missing an item? Compare your packing slip to your order. You may have ordered the “course book” rather than the “course set.”

How This Course Works

About This Course

Course Book

Teach this 120-lesson course 4–5 days a week. Each child’s learning pace is individual.

A brief 2–4 minute parent/teacher section opens each lesson. The rest of the lesson is completed independently by the child. He or she is prompted when to conference with you throughout the course.

A parent or teacher should review a child’s work daily for accuracy, offering gentle guidance as needed. A digital answer key is available on the Level 4 FAQs page found below for your convenience.

Read the complete details unique to Level 4 by clicking on the “Read About This Course” button below.

Spelling and Writing Workshops

Level 4 focuses heavily on reading, writing, and spelling. Your child completes one lesson each day from the Level 4 Course Book as well as the accompanying lesson found in the Spelling and Writing Workshops.

At the beginning of each unit in the Course Book, you will be prompted to quiz your child on the Challenging Spelling Word List found in the Reference Section of the Spelling and Writing Workshops book. This is how you will determine your child’s spelling list for the unit. Complete instructions are found on page 205 in the Spelling and Writing Workshops book. The Course Reading Assessment and the Challenging Sentences Climbs are also in the back of the Spelling and Writing Workshops book.

Personal and Shared Readers

Two readers integrated into this course help with fluency, comprehension, recall, and response. Even if your child reads at a more advanced level than his or her language arts placement, we recommend they read from the readers as instructed in order to strengthen these skills. Your child also reads independently each day from books at his or her reading level.
