Start Level K

Before You Begin Level K

Language Arts Level K is designed to be open-and-go! This means there is no need to read or prepare anything daily.

It is, however, extremely useful to spend a few minutes getting an overview of the course. Here are a few highlights to help you have successful start.

Required Items Needed for This Course

The Level K course set arrives shrink wrapped and includes the individual items listed below. Are you missing an item? Compare your packing slip to your order. You may have ordered the “course book” rather than the “course set.”

If something is missing, contact our Customer Support Team at [email protected] and we will be happy to help you.

Daily Items Needed

  • Scissors, glue, colored pencils or crayons
  • Personal white board and dry erase marker

  • A three-ring binder to use as the child’s “My Book of Stories and Writings” (This same binder can be used through all course levels to keep the writing assignments the child creates.)
  • The Good and the Beautiful Level K Handwriting course or another handwriting program should be used two or more days a week in conjunction with this course.
  • Independent reading materials: We recommend The Good and the Beautiful Beginner Books Boxed Sets A–D for personal or shared reading. Begin with Set A and progress to the next set as the child gains confidence in reading. Each set includes 10 beautifully illustrated books for early readers.

How This Course Works

Lesson Pacing

This 120-lesson course is designed to be taught 4–5 days a week. Level K focuses heavily on phonics and reading, and requires daily one-on-one time with a parent or teacher. Learning is a journey for children. While some children complete a lesson a day, others may move at a quicker or slower pace. Whatever the child’s pace, it is acceptable if he or she is enjoying learning and not feeling too rushed or overwhelmed. As you begin this course, watch for cues from your child that show how much work he or she can do in one session.

Easy-to-use Format

The lessons are laid out in an easy-to-use format. Simply open the book each day and follow the instructions, learning along with the child. Blue text indicates instructions to you, the teacher, and black text is what you read to the child. Each lesson concludes with an independent practice section for the child to complete on his or her own. It is a great way for the child to show what he or she knows and a convenient time for you to begin working with another child.

Reader

The Level K Reader helps with decoding, fluency, recognition of sight words, and comprehension. The course book prompts you to begin using the reader after Unit 2. We also recommend The Good and the Beautiful Beginner Books Boxed Sets for personal or shared reading.
